How to read a page here
Every page starts with a short summary of what it covers, followed by numbered steps. The steps use plain language and avoid jargon—no ‘optimal photoperiod’ or ‘nutrient lockout’ unless it’s explained first.
Timings are in minutes or days, never in vague terms like ‘soon’ or ‘when ready.’ Measurements use grams for soil mixes and inches for spacing, with conversions where needed. Photos show real seedlings, not perfect stock images.
Look for the ‘Key Takeaway’ box at the end of each page—it’s the one thing you should remember if you only read one part. Ignore the ‘Also Try’ section on a first read unless you’re curious about related plants.
When it does not work
If a method isn’t working, check the basics first: the seed packet’s expiration date, the water temperature, and whether the tray has drainage. Seedlings often fail because of things that seem obvious only in hindsight.
Before you give up
- Did you use fresh seeds? Old seeds lose viability, even if the packet says ‘non-GMO’ or ‘heirloom.’
- Is the soil damp but not soggy? Overwatering drowns roots before they can grow.
- Are the seedlings getting light for 12+ hours a day? Stretching means they’re hungry for sunlight.
- Did you harden them off before planting? Moving them outside too soon shocks their systems.
